Synopsis
Follow a singer who dies suddenly while on tour in Japan, but her spirit lives on as she embarks on a journey to find her humanity in the afterlife. Set to premiere in Singapore, which also marks the film’s Southeast Asian premiere, Spirit World is set to be jointly presented at the 40th edition of the vOilah!
Spirit World is a multi-layered film that centers on two very human impulses
One, the creative instinct that drives artists, and the other, the emotional need for familial connection. Early on, the film introduces three characters who have lost touch with both of their defined impulses.
This is of course a very idealized perspective on the universal question – what happens after death?
Singer-songwriter Claire (Deneuve), former songwriter turned piano tuner Yuzo (Sakai), and his estranged son Hayato (Takenouchi), an anime director whose best, acclaimed work is clearly behind him. For these three characters, decisions and actions are necessary after death and in the afterlife to find solutions to life’s unresolved problems.
Spirit World answers this question in a very realistic, matter-of-fact way
Putting aside the fear of the unknown and deciding to help the living, a selfless pursuit that, for our characters, results in the fulfillment of their own humble desires. This is the life-affirming message of Spirit World: that the creative impulse can bear fruit in the form of healing family ties when pursued with selfless intention.
From a technical standpoint, Spirit World ticks all the boxes for audience engagement
The likeable performances are engaging, the beautiful landscapes of Takasaki and Chiba (and the seascapes) provide a pure feast for the eyes, and the homage is paid to the musical artists of the 60s and 70s, a golden age of creativity that we may never experience again. A sweet and heartfelt film experience for anyone who has felt drawn to creativity and the love of family.
